No Comments Haitian Earthquake: A deadly earthquake in the month of January 2010 caused severe damage to Haiti, almost collapsing the countrys economy.
The human death numbers exceeded 200000 and this disaster can be classified as one of the deadliest in the history of the world. The magnitude of the earth quake by itself was huge, at 8.9 on the Richter scale. The ensuing damage was more due to the lack of adequate preparation against earthquakes, concentration of population and lack of inadequately equipped infrastructure.
Most of the damage was caused by collapsing buildings which indicates poor construction methods and poor quality materials for construction. The aftermath of this major calamity of natural disasters list was compounded by the inability of the government in handling rescue operations. They were ill equipped to handle devastation of such magnitude and were also hampered by lack of facilities and funds. Humanitarian aid pouring in from all other countries of the world somewhat reduced the overall impact but the devastation was already humungous.
Pakistan Floods: Pakistan is a developing country that is ravaged by, inefficient government and terrorist threats.
Floods caused by torrential rains were too much for the country to handle. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that most of the affected areas were remote and inaccessible even in the best of times. Flood waters almost cut the people in these areas off from civilization.
Hoards of people died because of the flooding and even more people died because of water borne diseases and malnutrition. Worldwide relief and aid poured into Pakistan but the aftermath of destruction can be still felt to this day. The government deployed its army for rescue operations and many other countries also provided rescue workers to co-ordinate and direct rescue work.
